Perhaps jesus is pointing to himself when he says ‘this rock’. After the apostle peter’s statement of jesus that “you are the christ, the son of the living god” (matt 16:16), jesus responds, “and i tell you, you are peter, and on this rock i will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” (matt 16:18).
